our support
Without
the marvellous support that we have it would not be possible for us to
play wheelchair rugby. It is a lot of hard work, but can be alot of fun
as well.
escorts and nurses
Our escorts and nurses help us with equipment, getting kitted up, personal
care, picking us up off the court, changing wheels, fetching drinks etc.
Here's what some of the support team have to say:
I’m
Emma, and I’m one of the team escorts. I’ve been involved
with wheelchair rugby since 2003 – with the Pirates, and with the
GB Development Squad. My “day job” is working as a Senior
Physiotherapist at the Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries in Oswestry
since 2001. My “Magic Hands” are often needed on the courtside
– as long as you remember the “Pleasure/Pain” principle!!
I’m not too bad at helping with transfers either – even in
the middle of the night!!
I enjoy being involved with Rugby because it gives me an opportunity to
see people with spinal cord injury out of the acute hospital scenario
– a bit further down the line, living their lives! They’re
also a mad bunch of guys, and you can guarantee laughs-a-plenty when they’re
together!!!
referees & officials
Referees
and Assistant refs keep control of the game, it is not an easy job; they
have to: keep count of how long a player has the ball without bouncing,
how long it takes to get out of the half, watch for illegal contact, keep
an eye on players going out-of-bounds, the list goes on!
Table officials control the clock, the score and the direction of play.
If you are interested in training to be an Official, or would like to
get involved in another way, please get
in touch.
